- "Low Output Moving Coil Cartridges" refers to all cartridges with manufacturer's recommended load resistance of 2000 ohms or less (typically 10 to 400 ohms). These adapters use XLR connectors to connect to low impedance, high gain microphone inputs.
- "Moving Magnet Cartridges" refers to all cartridges with recommended load resistance of 47k ohms. This also includes most "high output moving coil" cartridges. These adapters use TS/TRS (1/4" phone) connectors to connect to high impedance, medium gain instrument inputs.
- Most audio interfaces / ADCs with built-in adjustable-gain preamplifiers include "combo" input jacks that accept both XLR and TS/TRS connectors. Different preamplifier circuits are used depending on the connectors inserted into the input jacks. This is the reason for using XLR for Low Output Moving Coil and TS/TRS for Moving Magnet.
